Position Summary:  The Senior Systems Engineering Manager will lead a team responsible for satellite systems engineering design activities and ensuring the designs can be translated into specifications for manufacturing.  

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. 65%
  • Lead a team to design AirbusUS satellites, including modifications to the heritage ARROW platform, to meet customer requirements:
    • Develop system-level requirements and requirement flow-down to the various disciplines, subsystems, and components - in all phases of the systems development lifecycle with particular emphasis on Design for Cost/Design for Manufacturability/Design for Test approaches
    • Ensure maximum reuse of the existing ARROW product and if necessary identify need for modification
  • Participate in multiple design activities (programs or mission) could lead to spacecraft, payload, satellite bus, ground system (control and user segments) and/or launch integration activities.
  • Participate in cross-functional planning, coordination, and task execution situations involving the full spectrum of system engineering and integration activities.
  1. 15%
  • Support the ARROW and other AirbusUS satellite development roadmaps for planned product improvement spirals to meet rising demand of diverse Intelligence and Defense missions for the US Government. This includes design adjustments, schedule, and cost targets aligned for future business opportunities
  • Lead the definition of the ARROW customization process for customer mission needs
  1. 10%
  • Perform engineering activities to accommodate payloads on a AirbusUS satellites and platforms, including the standard ARROW product. Promote and optimize cost savings by reuse of the platform design and manufacturing infrastructure in the pursuit of various constellation prospects.

Qualified Experience / Skills / Training: 

 

Education:

Required: Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technical, Engineering, Math) or related scientific areas or combination of education and experience.

Preferred: Master's degree in STEM (Science, Technical, Engineering, Math) or related scientific areas or combination of education and experience.

 

Experience:

  • A minimum of 15 years of experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 10 years of experience with a Master's degree in Satellite and/or Ground Systems Engineering (Avionics, Propulsion, power, thermal, AIT, sensors, flight software, Telemetry, Tracking & Control, user terminals, flight planning and mission management).
  • Experience working with satellite systems, starting from conceptual designs and tradeoffs through detailed design, development, manufacture, integration, test, launch, and early orbit operations.
  • Manufacturing experience highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities:

  • Proficiency with various systems engineering tools and processes
  • Familiarity with elements of space mission architectures extending beyond the satellite platform including launch, flight operations, mission CONOPS, user interfaces, etc.
  • Communicate effectively in a clear and concise manner across multiple levels.
  • Be team-minded and ready to work in a multi-functional and multi-cultural, fast-moving and complex/technical environment.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Flexible attitude and strong initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results.

Communication Skills (Spoken, Written, Influencing, Proficiency in Other Languages):

  • Excellent listening, comprehension & interpersonal skills as responsible for daily communication via email and phone calls required.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, communication (verbal/writing), and presentation skills.

Location(s):

  • Primary location is either Rosslyn, VA or Merritt Island, FL
  • If VA based, infrequent travel to Merritt Island, FL to work alongside OneWeb Satellites engineering staff
  • If FL based, infrequent travel to DC area to coordinate with VA-based team and present to various customers and mission partners
  • Infrequent international travel to collaborate with European Airbus counterparts
  • Possibility for on-site support during launch campaigns

Eligibility:

  • US citizenship is required

Clearance:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Government security clearance
  • Active DoD security clearance at Secret or above highly desirable.
